Canada has announced plans to strengthen its domestic defense industry as part of a broader strategy aimed at increasing national industrial capacity and supply chain resilience.

According to public reports, the multi-billion-dollar initiative includes the country’s first comprehensive industrial strategy dedicated specifically to the defense sector. The plan focuses on expanding domestic production capabilities and supporting long-term development of key technologies.

Prime Minister Mark Carney stated that the strategy aims to increase the share of defense procurement directed to Canadian suppliers, with the objective of reducing reliance on external sources for military equipment and related technologies.

Currently, a significant portion of government defense procurement spending is allocated to foreign manufacturers, particularly in areas involving major platforms and complex systems. Expanding domestic participation in procurement programs is expected to enhance supply chain stability and strengthen industrial expertise within Canada.

The strategy identifies several priority sectors for development, including ammunition production, aerospace technologies, unmanned systems, and artificial intelligence-based solutions. The initiative reflects broader global trends toward strengthening local industrial capabilities and diversifying supply sources within the defense sector.

Industry analysts note that increased investment in domestic manufacturing capacity can support technological innovation, improve long-term sustainability of supply chains, and create opportunities for cooperation with international partners.
