A sniper rifle with a retractable barrel and a development history of 20 years on a powerful cartridge, which is used, among other things, to destroy helicopters and other lightly armored vehicles.
I'm not kidding, the manufacturer's website and other sources constantly use information about the destruction of hovering helicopters. And this is understandable: the helicopter often has rather weak armor. The pilots of the "Crocodiles" who served in Afghanistan shared that they put iron sheets under themselves in order to avoid bullets from a regular AKM. Once again, a regular AKM could penetrate a Mi-24 helicopter. And here the cartridge is much more powerful and larger. But that's not all. When Britain purchased these rifles for its own needs, in an interview one of the representatives of the British Ministry of Defense shared that a platoon equipped with this weapon would be able to destroy up to 6 very expensive fighters or helicopters in the shortest possible time. That is, we were talking about lightly armored equipment in a parking lot, the cost of which is incomparably higher than 5-6 similar rifles.
Creation
Who do you think? Hungary! When you see some modern weapon, only Hungary will think highly of it. I do not belittle Hungary's merits at all. For example, they make high-quality AK clones under license, and they have their own completely unique developments. But here Hungarian designers have reached a qualitatively different level. Judge for yourself: the rifle is purchased by military and private individuals from the USA, Canada, Britain, Croatia and even Russia . After all, the Hungarians prudently made 2 versions of the rifle:
For the Soviet cartridge 12.7x108 mm;
Chambered for NATO standard cartridge: 12.7×99 mm (.50 BMG).
That is why weapons are relevant both West and East.
What is characteristic is that the user does not need to change the entire rifle. It is enough to change the barrel, bolt and magazine. That's it, the rifle can shoot a new cartridge.
Nutrition
The rifle is fed by a five-round magazine. No custom magazines were seen. There is not much room for maneuver. The magazine fits tightly against the pistol grip of the rifle and creating a custom magazine is impractical. Firstly, it will be inconvenient to use - the magazine will stick out where it should not be structurally. Secondly, do not forget that the caliber is not small and the weight will be even greater. So it is simply pointless.
Five rounds are quite sufficient for the purposes of this rifle, since it belongs to the class of weapons that are designed to fight against manpower in high-class armor and behind cover, as well as equipment and radar systems.
For reference, such a cartridge penetrates 25 centimeters of concrete , preserving energy for effective destruction of manpower. And this is a regular cartridge, not armor-piercing .
Advantages
Bullpup design (The weapon is more compact and ergonomic with the same performance indicators);
Dimensions (When in the travelling position, the size of the rifle is less than a meter);
Weight (GM6 Lynx weighs 1 kg less in combat condition than Barrett M82 without ammunition);
The ability to change the caliber (I don’t quite understand how this can be useful to an ordinary user or a soldier during combat operations, but this is clearly not a minus);
A million Picatinny rails (The top of the body contains one large rail for mounting sights. Rails on the right and left for laser pointers and rangefinders. At the bottom, a rail for various grips. Everywhere, basically).
Flaws
Look at its appearance. It is an ideal weapon, it has no drawbacks. But seriously, the current version of the rifle is an evolution of a whole series of large-caliber sniper rifles of Hungarian production. The history of their creation and modernization began back in 1987. Therefore, the statement about the absence of drawbacks is not so far from the truth. At the moment, this is the final version of the development, which has been modernized for 20 years. Even its name says it all - SERO GM6 Lynx, where "GM6" is Gepard Model 6, that is, "Cheetah Model 6". And "Gepard" itself is the designation of a whole series of large-caliber rifles. Well, "SЕRО", as you may have guessed, is the name of the manufacturer.
Of the minor disadvantages - strong recoil , compared, for example, to the Barrett M99. But it is worth paying tribute to the designers: you can shoot this rifle quite skillfully even while standing, unlike the Barrett M99. It is lighter, more compact and equipped with a rubber butt pad as standard. Also, a huge role in this is played by its recoiling barrel and some unrealistically effective muzzle brake, which is mentioned both on the website and in promotional videos. I still do not understand why it is so good (apart from the beautiful engraving of a lynx), but if the manufacturer actively talks about it, then why not.
Application
The weapon is relatively new. So far there is only data on its acquisition, and it is acquired by countries and companies that are far from poor and have huge military-industrial complex figures, such as Russia or the USA. There is an opinion that it is acquired not so much for armament, but for study.
